What is the Mooring Exchange?
An online clearinghouse for boaters to find and use underutilized existing moorings (fixed anchorages for boats).
Why was the service set-up?
We are hoping to help solve the current supply and demand problem: too many boats and too few moorings. Our service will more efficiently utilize the limited number of existing mooring sites for the benefit of all boaters.
How does it work?
Simple. If you have a mooring which will not be used for any given period, list it here in seconds. Interested parties will then contact you via email. If you are looking for a mooring for a given location during a given period, check out the list of available moorings and contact the owner by email. If your location is not found, try listing your desired mooring on the moorings wanted page.
Will my information be public?
No, only basic details about your mooring will be available on the find a mooring page. Your contact information will be hidden. Interested parties can email you and you can respond to whomever you wish (your email address will be hidden until you reply to the interested party). Otherwise, your information is private and we will not resell the data to any 3rd parties.
How do I edit my listing?
On the page that indicates your mooring inquiry/details, you will see an "edit listing" link. Upon clicking that link, you will be prompted for your email address. This acts as a simple password mechanism for you to access/edit your listing once again.
Is it okay to list my mooring?
The majority of towns/harbormasters allow the short term use of a mooring if the permit holder is not using it. In some cases you may need to alert the harbormaster and we would encourage you to do so. Our service just provides a more organized means of arranging for what is a common practice among transient boaters.
Can I obtain a mooring permit here?
No. You would need to do that through a local town government, and in most cases existing mooring permits are non-transferrable.
Do I need to have a mooring permit to use this service? is it a 'swap' service?
No, you may be planning to trailer your boat to Cape Cod for a week-long vacation. Rather than launch and haul-out the boat 14 times you may simply wish to leave it on an available mooring for the week. Or if you are cruising the coast then you could plan your itinerary around available moorings in different locations (and not arrive at a location only to find there is no space).
What if I have a mooring?
Great, you can use both services here: list your mooring for others to use while you are away and find available moorings during your next cruise.
Which regions are served?
Our service is new and we are focusing our promotional efforts on the Northeast right now. However, anyone is free to list their mooring wherever it may be. It's just that our promotional push will be geared toward the northeast coast of North America.
